Clifton is a council estate within the city of Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England. The area is rich in history, and includes the famous (and reputedly haunted) Clifton Hall, Clifton Village, and Clifton Grove. As part of the greater Nottingham area, Clifton shares much of its economy, identity and history with Nottingham itself.
Clifton is served by a number of shop clusters, providing local specialty shops, which are complimented by three major supermarkets within the estate. At one time, the housing estate was the largest council estate in Europe. Many of the homes used a type of ‘no fines’ concrete construction which utilizes a largely aggregate based concrete which forms air voids which act as an insulator. Although initially constructed as a council project, most of the original estate residences are now privately owned.
Clifton has excellent transport facilities to and around Nottingham, being served by major bus routes as well as the A453. Being within the Nottingham borders, the estate is based around Nottingham’s main economy, with most of the residents working within the city borders. Nottingham has a modern and diverse economy, based upon Technology, Sciences and Financial services. There’s also a thriving commercial sector in the city providing retail services to around one million residents. The Nottingham area as a whole provides the second largest GDP in England, and the fourth largest in the entire United Kingdom.
One of Clifton’s most notable historical landmarks is the Clifton Hall country house. This Grade 1 listed building traces its roots back to the 11th century, and the current structure was remodeled in the 18th century, giving the Georgian look that is well known today. The hall rose to fame when it was claimed to be haunted in the mid-20th century. The millionaire owner of the property claims that he and his family experienced paranormal activity in Clifton Hall, escalating to the point where they found unexplained blood drops around the house. After vacating the property in 2008 and defaulting on payments, Clifton Hall was reclaimed by the bank that financed the property, and the owners vowed never to return.
